Cape Town among TripAdvisor’s Top 25 Destinations

Iconic Table Mountain in Cape Town

South Africa’s seaside city of Cape Town has been named one of the Top 25 Destinations in the World in Trip Advisor’s 2012 Traveler’s Choice Awards.

Known as the Mother City, Cape Town came twenty-third on the list, while also being voted second favorite destination in Africa.

Travellers can explore the cities major attractions including the historic Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was held for 27 years, scenic Table Mountain, the Kirstenbosch National Botanic Gardens and The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve offering sweeping sea vistas, hiking trails and wildlife encounters.

The official CTT Visitor Information Centre network drew 13 495 walk-in visitors during March 2012, of which 5 891 were domestic and 7 604 international. The top three contributors to international visitor numbers were Germany (25 percent), other European countries (23 percent) and the UK (20 percent).
When asked why Cape Town was recognised, Cape Town Tourism CEO, Mariette du Toit-Helmbol said many people vote for the destination they aspire to visit and not necessarily the places they have already been.

“Awards are a significant boost to any destination’s reputation and the 2011/2012 summer season saw a real increase in tourism, no doubt influenced by accolades, such as the Tripadvisor Destinations top spot,” Ms Du Toit-Helmbold said.

Backing this, Ms Du Toit-Helmbold noted that awards need to be followed up with tangible marketing campaigns which reinforce the message and capture the interest that the moment brings.
