STA Travel and United Airlines this week teamed up to announce Australian travellers are now able to book non-stop flights from Melbourne to Los Angeles, one of the most popular destinations departing Australia, aboard United Airlines new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

The new United Airlines direct flight comes off the back of strong growth in demand from Australians wanting to travel to LA, with the city ranking third most popular for departures last year and an increase of 21% in departures from Australia between 2012 and 2013.

The inaugural United Airlines direct flight was operated by the brand new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and, in honour of the event, STA Travel’s ‘STAn’ Kombi van headed out to Melbourne airport to meet with Dave Hilfman United Airlines, Senior Vice-President, and Alison Espley, United Airlines Director Australia and New Zealand.

Jerome King, Air Product Manager for STA Travel Australia said he expected the flight to prove very popular with travellers.

“STA Travel is excited to offer this brand new United Airlines flight option to our travellers and we know it will be welcomed by Victorians and Melbournites looking to reap the rewards of increased competition on the popular Melbourne – LA flight route,” he said. “Our Victoria-based travellers will also be able to enjoy United’s new Boeing 787-9, which features fresher air and a lower cabin altitude to help you arrive ready to enjoy your destination sooner.”

The flight will run six days a week and replace the current route which sees United’s Melbourne-LA flights go via Sydney with a one-hour stopover. STA Travel will support United Airlines bookings of these flights in Australia.

“STA Travel is honoured to join the United Airlines team in celebrating their inaugural Melbourne to LA flight in our STA Travel Kombi,” King added.

STA Travel first teamed up with United Airlines when it began services to Australia in 1986, when all services operated via Sydney.
